Four Critical Responsibilities of the Non-Profit Board
- Hire and Executive Director and periodically evaluate performance
Collaboration, openness, shared expectations, partnership and frank and constructive feedback nurtures this relationship where both ED and board have leadership roles in the organization.
- Plan for the FUTURE of the organization
If the board provides direction and guidance in the context of the future, it will tend t address important issues instead of the merely urgent, and avid the tendency to dabble in managing the here and now
- Monitor and Evaluate results toward the policy outcomes established by the board
Board members are the trustees of the organization they serve. Responsible for stewardship of assets, image and budget. Also monitors progress twoard the policy outcomes it has established within its planning framework.
- Be an advocate for the organization
May include networking, outreach, and image support, advocacy for the mission, resource development (fundraising).
Working Agreements are standards of board member participation and conduct. Established informally by the boards, use as means of self evaluation, ideally every six months or so. Add an element of fun to your meetings.
Board make up is best without designated seats for specific types i.e. producer, government rep etc.
Task groups instead of committees
Advisory committees not effective
Handouts include samples of board composition analysis, board candidate membership application, sample board member job description.
Ideas for implementation:
Ask board what would be fun for them? On monthly agenda, include a quick hands on of some studio or office equipment, website tour, etc. Monthly agenda set aside specific time for self evaluation component. Interview of each board member on camera for stock file.
Highlight one sub topic on each future board agenda - Greg/Audra
